The Second International Seminar Series Faculty of Sharia and Law: The Growth of Global Halal Industry
FSH News, Madya Meeting Room – In an effort to realize the internationalization of the Faculty of Sharia and Law, the second series of the International Seminar was held in collaboration with the Institute of Youth Life Quality Development Pattani, Thailand, and the Thai-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce. The seminar, titled "The Growth of the Global Halal Industry: Exploring Multiple Perspectives," took place on Monday, July 30, 2024.
The seminar featured Dr. Chanon Abdul Aziz Dalai, Chairman of the Institute of Youth Life Quality Development, Mr. Abdul Ghaffar Warsi, President of the Thai-Pakistan Chamber of Commerce, and Dr. Atep Abdurrafiq, M.Si, a lecturer at the Faculty of Sharia and Law, UIN Jakarta, with moderation by Windy Triana, M.A., Ph.D.
The Halal industry has experienced remarkable growth in recent years, driven by the increasing Muslim population and rising demand for Halal products and services. This industry has a significant impact on global trade, investment, and political relations.
Dr. Dalai explained that Halal commodities have become a significant industry in Thailand. In Thailand, Halal certification is managed by CICOT (The Central Islamic Council of Thailand), which operates directly under the Royal Government. This political structure strengthens CICOT and enables it to perform its role effectively. Additionally, Thailand has a Halal Science Center at Chulalongkorn University, equipped with a Halal testing laboratory.
Meanwhile, Mr. Warsi highlighted that the development of the tourism industry also impacts the Halal industry in Thailand. Halal certification in Thailand has gained recognition from several countries. Among the countries whose products are certified Halal by Thailand are Laos, Cambodia, China, and Vietnam.
Therefore, the Halal industry must be ready to continue growing due to technological advancements, changes in consumer preferences, and the growing Muslim population. It is expected that this industry will continue to play an important role in shaping the global economy and geopolitical landscape in the coming years.[LFM]
