International Guest Lecture: Inching Toward Equality “Bilateral Inheritance Under the KHI

FSH News, Madya Meeting Room – One of the professors from Southwestern Law School Los Angeles, Prof. Mark Cammack, was a speaker at a seminar titled “Inching Toward Equality: Bilateral Inheritance Under the KHI.” At the beginning of his presentation, he shared his interest in studying Islamic law in Indonesia, particularly during a time when the marriage law in Indonesia was being revised. He spent about 10 years researching Islamic law in Indonesia.

In his presentation, Prof. Cammack compared the concept of inheritance law in classical fiqh books with the law in Indonesia. Generally, inheritance law in classical fiqh books follows a patrilineal concept. However, Hazairin's view tends to adopt a bilateral concept, where both men and women have equal rights. “The legal concept applied by the Religious Court follows Hazairin's inheritance law concept,” explained Prof. Mark (Tuesday, August 6, 2024).

At the end of his speech, he said, “I am very happy and grateful to all of you, because in America, it is rare for people to be interested in what I just presented.” said Prof. Mark Cammack. The guest lecture event was attended by faculty members and students of the Faculty of Sharia and Law. “We hope that this activity will provide more knowledge that can be studied and used for research,” hoped Prof. Mesraini, Vice Dean for Academic Affairs.[LFM]
