FSH News, Jakarta — Dean of the Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, Prof. Muhammad Maksum, visited the office of Jimly School of Law and Government (JSLG) on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, to discuss potential areas of institutional collaboration.

Prof. Maksum was welcomed by Muzayyin Mahbub, Chairperson of the JSLG Board of Management, and Rasyid Ridho, Secretary-General. The meeting followed an initial discussion between FSH and JSLG, which had resulted in a mutual agreement to pursue collaborative initiatives between the two institutions.

Muzayyin highlighted JSLG’s interest in the development of Islamic economic law, particularly the growing use of Shariah-based contracts in Islamic finance. He noted that Shariah contracts have distinctive characteristics that differentiate them from conventional agreements and are recognized within the applicable regulatory framework, making them legally binding on the parties involved.

In line with JSLG’s programs, Muzayyin expressed interest in conducting a study on Shariah auditing of Shariah-based contracts. One of JSLG’s flagship services is legal auditing, and he suggested that this expertise could be further developed as a basis for auditing Shariah contracts.

Prof. Maksum welcomed the proposal, noting that Shariah financial transactions currently involve a wide range of contractual arrangements, including lending and borrowing, sales, capital partnerships, and services. Each type has its own structure and characteristics. Lending and borrowing may use qardh contracts, sales may use murabahah, partnerships may use syirkah, while service transactions may use ijarah. Various other contractual structures may also be applied in Shariah financial transactions.

He further explained that audits of such contracts could cover both legal and Shariah compliance aspects. Through collaboration, FSH and JSLG could combine their respective expertise to develop a comprehensive approach to legal and Shariah auditing of Islamic financial agreements.

Beyond legal auditing, the two institutions also agreed to explore collaborative programs aimed at strengthening the competencies and professional capacity of their respective human resources. As a next step, a cooperation agreement is expected to be signed in the near future, alongside a seminar focusing on legal and Shariah auditing of contracts in Islamic finance.

The collaboration is expected to strengthen academic and professional engagement between FSH UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta and JSLG while contributing to the development of expertise in Islamic finance, particularly in the areas of legal compliance and Shariah governance.
