FSH NEWS, LKBH Room — Transportation accidents continue to occur across various modes of transportation in Indonesia. Concrete measures are therefore needed to reduce the risk of accidents, with preventive efforts prioritized before accidents occur and cause harm to transportation users.

Deputy Chair of the Legal Consultation and Aid Institute (LKBH), Subhan Ansori, stated that the complexities surrounding transportation safety in Indonesia must be addressed through risk-based supervision.

“People have the right to be safe when using transportation services. The state must supervise transportation modes by taking preventive interventions before accidents occur,” Subhan said during the regular Djuanda Forum discussion organized by the LKBH of the Faculty of Sharia and Law (FSH), UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, on Monday (September 21, 2026).

Subhan further emphasized that the implementation of a safety rating is important as an instrument for the public to understand how safe the transportation services they use are. He explained that the information should be followed up by regulators through concrete measures to ensure passenger safety.

“If the safety rating declines, supervision should be strengthened. Operators should be required to make improvements, face operational restrictions, or even temporary suspension if critical risks are identified,” Subhan stressed.

In addition, the UIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta criminal law lecturer stated that transportation operators should be required to regularly disclose safety indicators to transportation users. At the same time, regulators must respond to identified risks before accidents occur.

“Therefore, safety rights are the rights of citizens to know about and demand safety,” Subhan explained.

Subhan also noted that sanctions against transportation operators for failing to comply with applicable regulations remain relatively weak. He encouraged stronger enforcement of existing rules.

“However, regulators should also consider incentives for compliant operators by providing rewards to those who demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring passenger safety,” Subhan said.

As is widely known, a number of transportation accidents have recently occurred both on land and at sea. These incidents should be followed up through improvements in regulations and supervision to strengthen public protection for users of public transportation.
