BACHELOR OF ISLAMIC ECONOMIC LAW

Bachelor of Islamic Economic Law (Mu’amalah) (BIEL) was established on August 1, 1994, and was previously named Muamalat Jinayah (Islamic Civil and Criminal Law) Study Programme. In 1999, the name was changed to Muamalat (Islamic Economics and Banking), based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Institutional Development, Ministry of Religion of the Republic of Indonesia Number: E/48/1999 dated 25 February 1999. The BIEL operation permit has been extended several times. In 2008, the permit was extended based on the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education, the Ministry of Religion No. Dj. I/202/2008 concerning the Extension of the Permits for Organising Study Programmes at State Islamic Universities. In 2014, the ministry renewed the permit and adjusted the new nomenclature of Study Programmes through the Decree of the Director General of Islamic Education, the Ministry of Religion No. 3867 of 2014. With this Decree, the name of Muamalah (Islamic Economic) has been changed into Sharia Economic Law. The Study Programme aims to produce graduates to meet the needs of Islamic economic industries and other related institutions.

BIEL is designed to produce graduates who not only master economic law but can also apply Islamic values in economics and business. In addition, the students are also trained to think critically, conduct research, and contribute to economic development based on Islamic principles. The graduate profiles set by BIEL are as follows:

  1. Legal practitioners, such as judges, lawyers, arbiters, Islamic economic business supervisors and advisors who can implement theories and concepts of economic law and Islamic economic law and have managerial skills as legal practitioners;
  2. Researchers who are able to conduct research in Islamic economic law by considering inter or multidisciplinary approaches in response to Islamic economic issues in society;
  3. Legal activists who are able to advocate Islamic economic issues in courts or off-courts to create justice in society.

BIEL has several distinctive characteristics that differentiate it from other economic law degree programmes. These are:

  1. Interdisciplinary Approach: BIEL combines elements of economics, law, and sharia (Islamic law) to understand and apply the principles of Islamic economics.
  2. Focus on Islamic Economic Principles: BIEL emphasises Islamic economic principles, such as social justice, fair distribution, prohibition of riba (usury), gharar (uncertainty), and maysir (gambling). Students learn to apply these principles in different financial and economic contexts.

Islamic Banking and Finance Law: BIEL offers in-depth insights into Islamic banking and finance law. Students learn about Islamic financial instruments such as mudarabah, musharakah, murabaha, and istisna' and Islamic financial institutions such as Islamic banks and takaful (sharia insurance).
